The inaugural Row for Solas fundraising event, held on Saturday, 30th May, was an outstanding success, raising an incredible €58,789 in support of Solas Cancer Support Centre.
More than 200 participants took part in the unique fundraising challenge, demonstrating the power of community, teamwork and determination. Teams of five completed a challenging 42.2km marathon-distance relay on stationary rowing machines, creating an energetic and inspiring atmosphere throughout the morning.
Organised by a dedicated committee including, Eamon Cullen (Waypoint Training), Harry Power (Waterford Recovery Services), Lisa Finn and Clare Walsh, the event exceeded all expectations, with teams and individuals rowing side by side to support the vital work of Solas.
Explaining the motivation behind the event, committee member Harry Power said: “Each member of the committee has been personally affected by cancer, either directly or through a family member or friend in recent years. Our goal was to create a unique challenge that was accessible to people of all fitness levels while raising funds to support the invaluable services provided by Solas in our community.”
Tracy McDaid, Manager of the Solas Cancer Support Centre, explains what this event means to the charity: “We are blown away by the energy and enthusiasm of the Row for Solas event, both in terms of the incredible physical challenge on the day but also the huge amount raised by the participating teams and their supporters. The service will cost €1.2 million to operate this year and it’s because of the amazing community spirit of such events that we are able to support people impacted by a cancer diagnosis in Waterford and surrounding areas.”
The Row for Solas committee extended its sincere thanks to everyone who participated, donated, volunteered and supported the event, helping to make the fundraiser such a phenomenal success.
