Fine Gael Cllr Liam Brazil has been elected the new Mayor of Waterford City and County Council.

Cllr Brazil was elected to the position at the AGM of the local authority held today at City Hall.

Cllr Brazil was first elected to the Council in 2004 and received the highest number of first preference votes of all councillors in the 2024 Local Election.

He was proposed by his party colleague Cllr Pat Nugent who described him as an outstanding advocatefor various causes particularly in the Comeragh District. Fianna Fáil Cllr John O’Leary seconded the

proposal, saying Cllr Brazil understood the heartbeat of Waterford.

Sinn Fein Cllr Kate O’Mahoney had proposed her party colleague Cllr Donnchadh Mulcahy for the role.

Cllr Brazil received 21 votes to Cllr Mulcahy’s nine.

Cllr Jim Darcy was elected Deputy Mayor.

Two councillors, Independents David Daniels and Joe O’Riordan, had sent apologies.
