The family of Lee Reeves provided an update after the Limerick boxer was put into an induced coma following his last fight.
Reeves had to be stretchered out of the arena after his fight with Gary Cully at the 3Arena on August 1 when he was knocked out in the final round.
He’s been described as being in a ‘critical but stable’ condition and has been in an induced coma ever since, as well as undergoing brain surgery. A GoFundMe page has been set up for him and his family to help cover recovery expenses.
It was a scary scene at the 3Arena, but former boxer and friend of Reeves, Jonathan O’Brien, has provided a positive update after speaking to the Limerick boxer’s family.
‘Just had a phone call from Lee Reeves’ father, Tony and the sisters last night. There was a little improvement with Lee’, O’Brien said in an Instagram video.
‘Tony asked him to open his eyes, and after 5 seconds Lee opened them three-quarters, and then he asked him to do it again and squeeze his hand, and Lee did, which is amazing but not where they would like it to be, so keep praying for Lee and donating to the GoFundMe page in my bio.’
‘Now guys, we’re not gonna run away with this. This is a little improvement. It’s not where the family need him to be. He needs to be a lot more forward than this.’
O’Brien then urged people to donate to the GoFundMe, as Reeves is expected to go abroad to the United States or Sweden to continue his recovery.
At the time of writing, the GoFundMe has raised over €108,000, just over €20,000 short of the €130,000 goal.
