The Cathaoirleach of the Dungarvan/Lismore District says there is shock and sadness in the area following a fatal assault.

Gardaí are continuing their investigation into a fatal assault in Cappagh following the death of a man in his 70s.

Emergency services responded to an incident shortly after 6pm on Monday evening.

The man was discovered with serious injuries outside a residential property and was later pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has since been removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Waterford, where a post-mortem examination will take place.

A man in his 40s was arrested at the scene and is currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda station in the Eastern Region.

Gardaí have confirmed that a Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the case, with an incident room established at Dungarvan Garda Station.

The Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have also been notified.

Investigations into the fatal assault in Dungarvan remain ongoing.
