Waterford Hospice Movement has honoured local volunteer Teresa Barrett as its 2026 Hospice Hero, recognising her years of dedication and fundraising support for hospice services in the county.

Teresa received the award at a special ceremony in St Francis Hospice in Blanchardstown last week, where she was joined by volunteers from across the country who were also recognised for their work with local hospice groups. The awards coincided with the launch of this year’s Hospice Sunflower Days campaign.

A long-time supporter of Waterford Hospice, Teresa plays a key role in organising annual fundraising events including Hospice Sunflower Days and the hospice coffee morning campaign. Waterford Hospice says her commitment and support over the years have made a major difference to local fundraising efforts.

This year marks the 36th anniversary of Hospice Sunflower Days, with on-street collections taking place on Friday June 12th and Saturday June 13th. Volunteers will be out across towns and villages nationwide raising funds for hospice and palliative care services, with all money raised locally staying in the local area.

Broadcaster Miriam O’Callaghan, who is an ambassador for the campaign, praised volunteers and fundraisers at the launch event. She said local support for Hospice Sunflower Days helps make a real difference to hospice and homecare services in communities across the country.

Chairperson of Waterford Hospice, Barbara Murphy, said the organisation was delighted to recognise Teresa’s hard work and dedication. She is also encouraging people across Waterford to support this year’s campaign and help raise vital funds for hospice services.

Together for Hospice, the national hospice movement, represents 24 hospice and specialist palliative homecare providers around the country. The services provide free care and support to people living with life-limiting illnesses, as well as assistance for their families.

Waterford Hospice is also looking for volunteers to help with this year’s Sunflower Days collections. Anyone interested in taking part or making a donation can find more information through the campaign website.
