A new chapter is beginning for Ferrybank’s landmark Village Bar, with local businesswoman Helen Meyler announcing that her new venture will be called Helen’s Bar & Restaurant.

Helen, who along with Mark McMahon who ran The Bistro at Tramore Golf Club, confirmed the name during an interview with WLR as preparations continue to transform the former Chinese restaurant/Village Bar building on Fountain Street into a welcoming new food and hospitality destination.

The news was first welcomed by the Ferrybank Focus group on Facebook.

The new venue will feature an 80-seat restaurant and will offer breakfast, daily lunches, evening meals, Sunday lunch, coffee and casual bistro-style food.

Helen also hopes the outdoor seating area will become a popular spot for families, local sports teams and anyone looking to enjoy a relaxed drink or meal.

Speaking about the project, Helen said she is especially delighted to be returning to her roots, having grown up in Ferrybank before moving to Slieverue.

The restaurant is expected to open around September, although an exact opening date has yet to be confirmed.

The announcement also brings good news for locals, as the historic Village Bar building will remain in use.

Speaking about the new venture, Helen Meyler said she is excited to be bringing the business back to her hometown. “We’re really looking forward to this. It’s a huge opportunity for us, and we saw great potential,” she said.

A Ferrybank native, Helen added that opening the restaurant is particularly special. “I lived there all my life, and I’m absolutely delighted to be coming home.

It’s surreal to me at the moment, but I really am looking forward to it.” Helen said the new Helen’s Bar & Restaurant will feature an 80-seat restaurant serving breakfast, daily lunches, evening meals and Sunday lunch, adding, “We’re looking forward to families joining us, local teams, or just people wanting a quiet drink.

That’s what we’re hoping to see, Ferrybank coming back together again as a busy community.”

While the property had previously been linked with redevelopment plans, the existing owner is now understood to be retaining ownership and leasing the premises to Helen and Mark, ensuring the well-known building continues to serve the Ferrybank community.
