Waterford City and County Council is inviting members of the public to help shape the refurbishment of William Vincent Plaza in the city centre.

The project, which is being supported by investment from the Department of Local Government and Planning, will be led by landscape architects Áit Urbanism + Landscape, with Waterford-based DBFL acting as consulting engineers.

Originally developed as part of Waterford’s Millennium Projects, the plaza opened in 2001 and has become an important public gathering space, performance venue and viewing point overlooking the River Suir.

The refurbishment will include upgrades to the surfacing, existing canopy, lighting and public realm, while also creating a more attractive and accessible space for residents and visitors.

The plans will place a strong emphasis on landscaping, with new trees, planting and green infrastructure aimed at improving biodiversity, comfort and the overall appearance of the waterfront area. The renewed plaza is intended to provide a flexible, year-round space for events, performances, community activity, recreation and relaxation.

As the project is still at an early design stage, the council is now seeking public feedback.

Drop-in information sessions with the design team will take place at the Tower Hotel in Waterford on Thursday, August 20th, from 12.30 pm to 2.30 pm and again from 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm.

Those unable to attend in person can submit their views through Waterford City and County Council’s public consultations portal.

The closing date for submissions is 4.30 pm on Friday, August 28th, 2026.
