Waterford celebrates National Heritage Week from 15th to 23rd August, with a packed programme of free events.

These events explore the city and county’s fascinating Viking and medieval past.

Heritage Week at Reginald’s Tower

The celebrations begin on Saturday, 15th August, when visitors can enjoy free admission to one of Ireland’s oldest civic buildings. It’s the perfect opportunity to climb the medieval spiral staircase, explore the Viking exhibitions and soak up more than 800 years of history overlooking the River Suir.

Families are also in for a treat throughout Heritage Week with the Reginald’s Tower Lego Trail, running daily from 15th to 23rd August. Young explorers can follow the adventures of Ribbert FitzFrog while searching for Lego displays hidden throughout the tower, making history both interactive and fun.

Expert Opinion on Artefacts for Heritage Week

On Tuesday, 18th August, amateur archaeologists are invited to the popular Antiquities Roadshow, where renowned archaeologist Thomas Desmond will examine items brought in by the public and share stories from more than three decades of excavations across Ireland. Whether it’s an old coin, pottery shard or family heirloom, visitors can discover whether they’ve uncovered a genuine piece of history. Your artefact couldbe worth a fortune or be a genuine historical find!

History enthusiasts can also enjoy “Uncovering Uncomfortable Histories: Women’s Place in Waterford’s History and Heritage” on 19th August, as historian Mairéad Butler explores the stories of marginalised women, including those imprisoned in Reginald’s Tower and connected with the Waterford Magdalene Laundry.

Railway fans won’t want to miss “A History of the Limerick to Tralee Railway Line” on 20th August, offering a fascinating look at one of Ireland’s historic transport routes.

Finally, on Saturday, 22nd August, visitors can experience Reginald’s Tower Auf Deutsch—a free guided tour delivered entirely in German by Petra Kindler, offering international visitors and German speakers a unique way to explore one of Waterford’s most iconic landmarks.

Heritage Week Events Across the County

Elsewhere, there are events taking place in Ardmore, Woodstown, Lismore and events hosted by Waterford Treasures.

Many events are free, although advance booking is recommended for talks and guided tours due to limited capacity.
