Flahavan’s has issued a statement following the decision by workers at its Kilmacthomas plant to ballot for industrial action.

The company says it is “surprised and disappointed” by the decision and that it greatly values its employees and the positive working relationship it has built with them over many years.

Flahavan’s says discussions have been taking place with employees and their representatives regarding a new pay agreement and associated working arrangements.

The company says it remains committed to reaching a fair and sustainable agreement that supports both its employees and the long-term success of the business.

It says it is not appropriate to comment on the detail of the ongoing discussions, but believes the outstanding matters can be resolved through continued constructive engagement and the established industrial relations process.

The statement comes after trade union Unite said workers had unanimously decided to ballot for industrial action.

Unite says the ballot follows management’s attempt to tie a new pay deal to a proposed flexibility agreement which it says has not been seen or negotiated by the union.

The ballot is due to open on August 12th and close on August 21st.

Flahavan’s says it remains committed to engaging constructively with its employees and their representatives and working towards a mutually acceptable resolution.
