Dog fouling appears to be becoming an increasing problem across towns and villages in West Waterford.

Concerns have been raised over dog waste being left on footpaths, green areas and other public spaces, as well as bags of dog poo being abandoned on walls, fences and in other locations.

Cllr Donnchadh Mulcahy says he has received photographs from members of the public highlighting the problem.

He also experienced the issue firsthand while walking with his wife and children last Sunday morning, when one of his children stood in dog poo before it happened again a short time later.

He says public spaces should be places where families can walk and children can enjoy themselves without constantly having to watch where they are stepping.

Concerns have also been raised about dog owners picking up after their pets but then leaving the bags behind.

Waterford City and County Council’s position is that additional public bins are not provided specifically for dog waste and that responsible dog owners should bring the bag home and dispose of it in their own household bin.

Cllr Mulcahy says the vast majority of dog owners do exactly that and should not be tarnished by the actions of a small minority.

However, he says people who allow their dogs to foul public areas and simply walk away need to be held to account.

“It is a disgrace and shows absolutely no respect for the community or for the people who have to clean up after them,” he said.

Dog owners are being urged to bring a bag with them, pick up after their dog and dispose of the waste properly.

“It really is that simple,” Cllr Mulcahy said.
