Fire crews from Dungarvan and Kilmac responded today to a significant hillside fire in the Comeragh Mountains, with the blaze travelling down the mountainside.

The fire is understood to be more significant than the wildfire reported on Sunday, and at this stage it is not known which direction it may spread.

Waterford Fire Service says crews have now stood down for the evening following operations at the active hillside fire, which is located adjacent to the popular Coumshingaun Loop Walk.

A significant amount of smoke remains in the Kilclooney area, and members of the public are being urged to avoid the area. The Coumshingaun Loop Walk remains closed, and the fire service is asking people not to attempt the walk tomorrow.

Firefighters have been working in steep and difficult terrain to monitor and contain the blaze. Authorities are appealing to the public to stay away from the area to allow emergency services to carry out their work safely.

There have been no reports of injuries, and crews will continue to monitor the situation.
