A 36-year-old man has been formally charged this morning with Assault Causing Harm under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offenses Against the Person Act, 1997.

Niall Cummins, aged 36, with an address at 34 The Willows, Clarinwood, Tramore, Co. Waterford appeared before Judge John Cheatle at Waterford District Court.

Sergeant Robert Flynn from Tramore Garda Station gave evidence in relation to the arrest of the accused.

Yesterday morning, during a recitation of the rosary, in advance of the 10am mass in Holy Cross Church, Tramore, a woman in her 50s received a single stab wound to the chest.

At 10am, Niall Cummins was arrested at a house in The Willows, Clarinwood by Sergeant Robert Flynn.

He made no reply during arrest and caution.

Mr. Cummins appeared in court this morning without any legal representation, however the court was advised he is expected to have legal representation for his next court appearance.

The accused confirmed to the court that he is not currently making an application for bail. Inspector Niall Daly informed the court that any application for bail would be objected to by the State.

Prison Authorities are seeking a full psychiatric evaluation of the 36-year-old and he will appear before the court via videolink on Tuesday, July 28th at 10.30am.
