Síomha Ní Ruairc 'walloped by grief' as she marks late sister's birthday

Presenter Síomha Ní Ruairc has opened up about the reality of navigating grief as she marked what would have been her sister’s 35th birthday.
Her sister, Úna, died ‘unexpectedly’ at her home in London on April 20th 2025, leaving Síomha utterly ‘heartbroken’.
Síomha shared a sweet tribute to her late sibling by posting treasured black and white photos of the duo when they were young.

The new mum admitted that it felt ‘odd’ to share her grief on social media amongst her usual posts about her life and work.
‘But grief absolutely whalloped me round the head today,’ she wrote. ‘I want it to be known that it’s a part of me and a part of my life every day.’
The broadcaster went on to highlight the sweet tradition her family has to celebrate her sister.

‘We celebrated with her usual decadent birthday BBQ that my parents have thrown her every year for the last decade, if not more. What a pair,’ she wrote.
‘Seod é mo shaol. Breithlá sona Úna,’ she concluded sweetly.

Síomha previously opened up about their relationship, and admitted how they ‘absolutely killed each other’ in their teenage years ‘as sisters do’.
‘As adults, we accepted each other for exactly who we are, and I’m so proud of everything she achieved in her too-short life,’ she shared.
