Rosie O’Donnell has revealed the reaction that she gets in pubs when she orders a pint in Ireland.

The comedian moved to Ireland with her child Clay last year, after Donald Trump — with whom Rosie has had a decades-long feud — was re-elected as President of the US.

While Rosie has felt the love since she and Clay moved to these shores, which has included her doing stand-up shows in Ireland and appearing on the Late Late Show, she admits that sometimes the culture clashes are there — mainly, in the pub.

‘I drink this beer called Smithwick’s, which is kind of like a Boston lager,’ Rosie told Seth Meyers over in the US. ‘And every time I order it at a pub, I’ll go up and go “Can I get a pint of Smithwick’s?”

While the Kilkenny ale is enjoyed by certain clientele, Rosie said that she learns the hard way about said clientele, saying: ‘The bartender will go: “Rosie, have you got an old man with ya? The old men are the only people drinking this crap’

Rosie, definitely not an auld lad at the pub, wasn’t deterred, however, admitting: ‘It’s my favourite beer over there, but I’m ridiculed every time I want one!’

While the Irish drinking culture in America is usually whittled down to stereotypes and paddywhackery, Rosie believed that she got a first-hand experience of how much we actually do drink over here, as well — while she was in the doctor’s office.

‘I went to the doctor, first week I’m there, and there’s a questionnaire for new patients; one of the questions was “do you drink alcohol?” She told Seth. ‘I checked yes, and it said: “If yes, please check the box that most applies to you: How many drinks do you have in a week?”

‘The first box you can check said “1 to 15,”‘ dumbfounding Rosie, who ended up having to ask her GP just how it was possible for the least amount of alcohol one person could drink in a week would be up to 15 drinks.

“What would you say to me if I said I drank 15 drinks a week?” Rosie told her GP. ‘She goes, “I’d say move on to the next question.”

‘But I’ve been there for 18 months now, and I gotta tell you, 15 a week isn’t that hard to do in Ireland.’

Rosie had been embroiled in a feud with then real estate mogul and reality TV show host Donald Trump for over two decades, with her relocating to Ireland after he beat Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.

Speaking on her decision last year, Rosie told Ireland AM that it’s ‘so much safer’ here for her and her child Clay.

‘They love it here,’ Rosie said. ‘In America, it was hard for me to get them to go outside. They like staying home, love their iPad, they’re a digital artist, they do voiceovers on cartoons, but didn’t like to go out. Well, I can’t keep them home now. Isn’t that great?’

‘It’s so much safer,’ Rosie said. ‘In fact, [Clay’s] with friends walking places now. And when I was first here, they were telling me when we were looking for places to stay and live, they were like “oh [it’s] a great place because they’ll be able to take their bike to school.”

‘And I was like, “Over my dead body, they’re not riding a bike to school.” And now they’re able to do that. It’s just such a different culture and different feeling of safety for Clay as well as me.’
