Phil Collins’ son Mathew Collins has taken the next step in his football career after signing for one of Germany’s most historic clubs.

The 21-year-old has joined former Bundesliga champions 1860 Munich on a one-year deal after impressing coaches during a successful trial.

Although 1860 Munich no longer plays in Germany’s top division, the club remains one of the country’s most historic names in football.

Founded in 1860, they were among the original Bundesliga clubs, won the German championship in 1966 and once shared Munich’s Allianz Arena with rivals Bayern Munich before returning to their own stadium.

Mathew, whose mother is Phil Collins’ third wife Orianne Cevey, was born in Switzerland before growing up in Miami. He later attended boarding school in Évian, France, before moving to Germany as a teenager to continue his football development with FC Astoria Walldorf’s youth academy.

He arrives at 1860 Munich after spending last season with Austrian second-tier side Austria Salzburg, with the move marking another milestone as he continues to build his own career in the sport.

1860 Munich announced Mathew’s signing on Friday as preparations continue for the new season, with the club rewarding him with a contract after a successful trial period.

Phil Collins and Orianne Cevey divorced in 2008, with the singer reportedly paying a £25 million settlement, which at the time was the largest celebrity divorce payout in Britain.
