New details about Glen Hansard’s bike crash have emerged in the days after his untimely death.
The musician died in the early hours of Wednesday morning at the Strawberry Beds in Lucan, Dublin.
Since Wednesday, hundreds of people, including Bruce Springsteen and Bono, have paid tribute and plans for a public wake have been confirmed.
Now, Dublin Live has reported that gardaí are investigating whether Glen was ‘flipped’ from his bike after hitting a soft verge on the road.
A source told the publication: ’He did not collide with a tree or anything like that.
‘The belief is at this stage that the bike hit a soft verge on the road and that made him lose control of the vehicle. It then flipped over.’
Glen’s accident happened at around 4.30am, with a video of him taken on Tuesday night showing him singing at a nearby pub.
The clip is said to have been filmed at The Wren’s Nest in Chapelizod and shows Glen in the middle of the room playing his guitar next to other musicians.
After the video went viral, The Wren’s Nest shared a statement with RTÉ News saying that there wasn’t an after-hours lock-in on Tuesday and that Glen left the premises after closing time.
They also posted a tribute to Glen which read: ‘We are deeply saddened by the passing of Glen Hansard.
‘It was always a privilege to welcome Glen to The Wren’s Nest over the years. He will be remembered for his incredible talent, generosity and the joy he brought to so many.’
Glen’s funeral will be held at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin on Tuesday. The funeral will be open to the public, but access to the inside of the church will be limited due to the numbers expected.
On Monday, August 3, a public wake will be held for Glen in the Baroque Chapel at IMMA, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, between 11am and 4pm.
