Majella O’Donnell has been refreshingly candid about her mental health in recent months, and now she has revealed she has been diagnosed with ADHD.

The 66 year old had been keeping quiet about the diagnosis, which she received two years ago, but has decided to open up about the disorder, which can affect how the brain develops and functions.

Majella, who has spoken about her depression in the past, explained how the diagnosis helped her to understand her own behavior.

‘As someone with ADHD, I am very enthusiastic about new projects, and I want to do loads of things. I can get really hyper-focused on things and spend hours on them,’ she told the Irish Examiner.

The disorder has its upsides, as it meant she was able to write her book, It’s All in the Head, in about four weeks.

However, she acknowledges that she needs to be aware of that trait. ‘I know that if I take on too much, I can get too tired or stressed, and that can have a knock-on effect on how I feel.’

Majella has come to terms with being on medication for the rest of her life, as its acted as an ongoing support during her mental health woes.

She also knows to given herself space when she is getting overstimulated. ‘Sometimes when I go out with too many people, it can be overstimulating for me. I need the quiet, I need to pull back when that happens,’ she told the outlet.

Majella gushed over her husband Daniel, saying the country singer is ‘extremely supportive’ of her.

Early into their marriage, Majella decided to stop taking medication. However, when she began to fall into depression again, a chat with Daniel led to her returning to medicine again.
