The Love Island USA family has been left devastated following the sudden death of executive producer James Barker while the hit reality show is filming in Fiji.

Barker, who was 40, reportedly suffered an ‘unexpected medical emergency’ last week, according to a statement released by ITV America and Peacock.

The producer had been a key part of the Love Island USA team since 2020, initially joining as a story producer before stepping up to executive producer for the last three seasons.

He also played a major role in the show’s post-production and soundtrack.

ITV America and Peacock confirmed they plan to honour Barker during Tuesday night’s episode of Love Island USA.

In a joint statement, they said: ‘James’ unimaginable loss has been deeply felt across not just the entire Love Island USA production, but throughout all of ITV and Peacock.

‘He was a beloved and greatly valued member of our collective family whose kindness, talent and dedication left an indelible mark on all of us and everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.’

The statement continued: ‘We extend our heartfelt condolences to James’ family, friends and colleagues.’

Barker had built an impressive television career over more than a decade in the industry.

After beginning at Leftfield Pictures in 2011, he worked on popular shows including Pawn Stars, Counting Cars and Forged in Fire before moving on to produce episodes of Queer Eye.

He later became heavily involved with the Love Island franchise, working on both Love Island USA and Love Island Games.

The producer also collaborated with a number of major production companies including Scout Productions, Sharp Entertainment and Kinetic Content.

His death comes just weeks after the launch of Love Island USA’s eighth season, which premiered on June 2 and is currently filming in Fiji.

Hosted by Ariana Madix, the latest season has quickly become a talking point among viewers.

Just days before his death, Barker had shared a heartfelt post celebrating the show’s return and the team behind it.

‘We come to Fiji for magic. We come to @loveislandusa to laugh, to cry, to care,’ he wrote.

‘Our islanders feel like the best part of us, and stories feel perfect and powerful… because here… they are.’

He added: ‘Hope you’re all enjoying the new season brought to you by a huge squad of brilliant people.’

The post has since been flooded with tributes from colleagues and fans mourning his sudden passing.
