Kieran Cuddihy was on cloud nine when he got the call that he’d be replacing Joe Duffy on Liveline.

The dad-of-two subsequently made the move from Newstalk to RTÉ, which caused a bit of a kerfuffle at the time, but on the whole has paid off.

One notable difference between working for Newstalk and RTÉ is that now, for the first time, his salary will have to be publicly disclosed.

Kieran finds it a little ‘weird’, especially because his only confidante on the matter of salaries has only ever been his wife, Natasha.

‘I’ve never told anybody except my wife how much I’ve earned on any job ever,’ he told the Irish Independent. ‘And now suddenly the whole country will know when the top 10 comes out and the top 20 or whatever they end up publishing. It’s going to be weird when it comes out.

‘But when I got the job, people did ask me, and I told people because I knew it would be coming out eventually.’

Kieran shared that he’s on ‘great money’, €201,000, in fact, but there’s a catch.

The Liveline frontman spoke of how there’s a bit of instability in comparison to a civil servant job, saying it’s different ‘permanent and pensionable’-wise.

The dad-of-two is well aware that potentially three or six years down the line, he’ll receive a tap on the shoulder to say, ‘”We’re going in a different direction, thanks very much!”.’

‘That’s partly why you’re paid a good salary, because that’s always hanging over your head,’ Kieran admitted. ‘I don’t know how you get away from it. It’s the nature of the media in every country.’

The radio star admitted he would be ‘really annoyed and upset’ if he got that nod after just three years on Liveline, but he knows it’s the name of the game, and at the end of the day, it’s nothing personal.
