We’re still on a high after the success that was Hamnet, so we can only imagine how Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal feel.

The real-life besties’ on-screen chemistry is undeniable, so it’s only natural that dream team Jessie and Paul have been tapped to reunite for an ‘impossible love story’ on the big screen.

The Kerry woman and Maynooth man will reteam in Hold on to Your Angels by Beasts of the Southern Wild director Benh Zeitlin.

Zeitlin wrote and will direct the movie, which is set on the edge of South Louisiana. Paul will play ‘a hell-bound outlaw’, opposite Jessie, who will play ‘a ferocious shepherd of lost souls’, who then ‘fall in catastrophic love as their crumbling bayou paradise drags them under’.

The director said of his upcoming project: ‘Hold on to Your Angels is the most impossible love story I’ve ever witnessed – an outlaw romance for the end of America, set on the crumbling edge of South Louisiana.

‘I’ve been dreaming of telling it since its hero, Pam Harper, walked into an audition for Beasts of the Southern Wild 17 years ago. It’s a love letter to an endangered way of life – and a rallying cry for empathy across a fractured planet.’

The project is slated to begin filming in February.

Paul and Jessie are two of the busiest people we’ve ever come across. Juggling being a new mum to her beloved daughter, Isla, the Kerry woman most recently appeared in Hamnet, for which she scooped Best Actress at the Oscars, and The Bride!, a retelling of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, by Maggie Gyllenhaal.

And then you have Paul, who is right in the middle of filming what promises to be an epic four-film run of biopics about The Beatles.

Paul takes on the role of Sir Paul McCartney in the films, and stars opposite fellow Irish actor Barry Keoghan, as Ringo Starr, Harris Dickinson, as John Lennon, and Joseph Quinn, as George Harrison.

Saoirse Ronan also stars in the four-film project as Sir Paul’s late first wife, Linda McCartney.

It’s clear that Paul and Jessie aren’t the only ones who are keeping busy as the Irish dominate the acting scene once more.
