Britney Spears has been charged with a DUI after she was arrested earlier this year.
The singer was arrested back in March after she was spotted driving erratically, including ‘braking and swerving in and out of lanes.’
Police say that Britney was allegedly behind the wheel of the car, a 2026 BMW convertible, and was arrested and booked at the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.
Now, it has been confirmed that Britney has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs and will be arraigned in Ventura County, bordering on Los Angeles County.
The complaint doesn’t specify what substance Britney was allegedly under the influence of, and she is not required to attend her hearing as she is charged with a misdemeanour.
TMZ reported that Britney was ‘crying a lot’ as she was being booked, and was later taken to a hospital to have her blood drawn.
A statement from Britney’s management said that the incident was ‘completely inexcusable,’ and said that she would ‘take the right steps and comply with the law.’
She has since checked herself into rehab.
Prosecutors added that she could avoid jail time if she agrees to a plea deal, which is a lesser charge that will be offered to her as no one was injured in the incident, she voluntarily entered rehab, and she has no prior convictions.
The plea deal will likely result in her pleading guilty to reckless driving involving drugs and/or alcohol, which will likely see her placed on probation for 12 months, as well as pay a fine and take a court-ordered driver safety class.
