Waterford and UCD Rower, Andrew Goff won a Bronze Medal at the Rowing U23 World Championship at Plovdiv in Bulgaria last weekend.

He competed in the Lightweight Men’s Quadruple Sculls with Shane O’Connell from UCD, Stephen O’Connor from UCC and Niall Beggan from Commercial.  They won their heat comfortably on Wednesday beating last year’s gold medallist quad from Great Britain.

Their semi-final on Friday was won by Austria in a new Championship Record time.  The Irish quad moved from fifth place to third place in the closing stages to secure a place in the Final.

The Final was raced in 36 degrees of heat on Saturday.  The Irish quad were always in the battle for a medal keeping pressure on the Austrians and the Swiss all the way to the finish to secure Bronze.

They finished 1.75 seconds behind the winning Swiss quad and 0.28 seconds behind the Austrians.  They were comfortably ahead of the quads from Great Britain, Italy and France.

The Irish quad was coached by Dominic Casey and Paul Thornton.  The Irish Lightweight Men’s Pair of David O’Malley and Shane Mulvaney, both from UCD, also won Bronze at the Championship.

Andrew is a member of the Ad Astra Academy for Elite Athletes at UCD and competes for UCD.  He still trains with Waterford Boat Club with Eoin Whelan, Coach.  He is a past pupil of Waterpark College.
