Waterford duo Kelyn Cassidy and Zara Breslin have learnt their opponents for their opening bouts at the 2025 World Boxing Championships which take place in Liverpool from Thursday September 4th to Sunday September 14th.
A 17-strong Irish squad all learnt their fate this evening as a draw containing 500 boxers from various countries across the world was held at the M&S Bank Arena.
Cassidy will get his campaign underway in the evening session tomorrow, Thursday September 4th, when he takes on Noel Pacheco of the Dominican Republic in the men’s light heavyweight (80kg) preliminary round.
Should he progress, Cassidy will then be up against European gold medalist and Olympic quarter-finalist Gabrijel Veočić (Croatia) on Sunday afternoon, September 7th.
Tramore’s Zara Breslin will get her World Championships campaign underway on Saturday evening, September 6th when she comes up against Turkey’s Gizem Özer in the opening preliminary rounds of the women’s lightweight division (60kg).
Özer competed at the Paris Olympics in 2024, and was a bronze medalist at the 2023 European Games.
Should Breslin come through that encounter, she will go on to face Japan’s Ayaka Taguchi on Tuesday afternoon, September 9th.
