Wexford recorded an impressive and deserving win at Walsh Park this afternoon on their return to Division 1A of the National hurling league defeating Waterford by 2-20 to 0-19.
The visitors dominated the opening period and held a 0-12 to 0-6 lead at half-time with goalkeeper Mark Fanning chipping in with three long range frees.
The Slaneysiders played with the aid of a strong wind in the openeing period and shot just one wide.
Jake Dillon struck Waterford's only first half point from play after 19 minutes, while Pauric Mahony chipped with points from frees but it was Davy Fitzgerald's charges who lead by six points at the interval.
Waterford did make a bright start upon the resumption, Wexford did the opening score but four points in a row through Pauric Mahony, Jamie Barron, Tommy Ryan and Tadhg dé Búrca reduced the deficit to three points.
However, Wexford regained a foothold on the game and David Dunne struck the games opening goal to push the Slaneysiders six clear.
Dunne added his second goal soon afterwards which set the seal on Wexford's opening round win, he finished with 2-2.
Pauric Mahony hit eleven points for the Déise, the Ballygunner man finished as top scorer.
Waterford will play away to Tipperary next Saturday night at 7pm in Semple Stadium.
