West Waterford Athletics Club (WWAC) are exploring the prospect of developing an athletics track in the local area.
This comes after the club recently reached an all-time high of 457 members, further highlighting the demand for a facility of this nature.
The club are aiming to have the facility in Dungarvan to serve its members.
West Waterford Athletics Club established a track development subcommittee last April to get to work on this long-held ambition.
A suitable site is currently being identified by the subcommittee for development.
The facility would consist of an eight lane athletics track as well as an associated field events space and club house facilities.
The club was established in 1994 after the amalgamation of Cappoquin/Ballinameela A.C, Dungarvan A.C, and Ring/Old Parish A.C.
West Waterford Athletics Club Chairperson, Tom Leahy, outlined the club's aspirations.
"Our ambition is to create the new home of athletics and running in Dungarvan and West Waterford. In doing this, all members of athletic clubs in the West Waterford region, both juveniles and adults, will have an inclusive, universally accessible and safe place to train, offering high quality facilities and social opportunities."
The West Waterford Athletics Club chairperson highlighted the issues currently faced by club members when it comes to travelling to a tailor made facility.
“At present, the nearest track to Dungarvan is 45 kilometres away in Waterford City where there is no availability for evening sessions. Between athletics and triathlon, there are eight clubs in the West Waterford region with a combined membership which now exceeds 1000 so there is clearly a need for a fully-fitted athletics track in the region.”
