Waterford Wildcats continued their superb recent run of form with a 74-72 win against Fr Matthews of Cork in the Mercy Sports Hall on Saturday night.

Having taken the lead, the Wildcats dropped off to allow their opponents to seize the advantage - but they showed grit to prevail and secure a sixth win in a row.

The Wildcats haven't lost since their first game of the season and are the form team in the league.

Manager Tommy O'Mahony was happy to get the win, but says it was hard work.

"We came out of the traps really well in the first quarter. I think we went up by about ten points. For some reason, we just dropped our intensity in the second quarter and we let them lead by about six or seven. We managed to haul that back to a point around half-time. In the fourth-quarter, it was tit for tat - credit to a few players, they stepped up for us. We weren't really consistent, but a win is a win. We'll take it. Six wins in a row."

Next up for the Waterford Wildcats is a cup clash with the same opponents, and O'Mahony is expecting another closely fought battle.

"I'm sure that game is going to be equally as hard. We have a good few things that we need to work on in training during the week. I'm delighted with the win tonight. There's room for improvement at the same time. We have to work hard and hopefully, put in a better performance next week."
