Waterford Ladies face a tough opening test this Sunday when they travel to the BOX-IT Athletic Grounds to play Armagh at 2 pm. The Orchard County side will enjoy home advantage, with Greg McGonigle back in charge.
The Déise will draw confidence from their last meeting with Armagh. They recorded a dominant 1-22 to 1-12 win in Round 6 of last year’s National League. That result handed Armagh their first defeat of 2025 and proved a turning point in their season. They managed just one win in their next five games — the Ulster final against Donegal — where Blaithín Mackin scored their only goal from a second-half penalty.
Waterford built that league victory on strong structure, discipline, and sharp finishing. Many of the same players will again play key roles this weekend. Kate Hogan led the scoring with an excellent 0-8, including four frees. Blaithín McMaugh added 0-5, while Cait Walsh found the net with 1-2. Captain Kelsey Gardiner marshalled the defence, alongside Casey, McCarthy, and Murray.
Armagh will welcome back star forward Aimee Mackin. She returned late last season after her second ACL injury and now has a full preseason behind her. She will be a major threat. Lauren McConville captains the side, with Aoife McCoy and Cait Towe named joint vice-captains.
Despite Armagh’s home advantage, Waterford will believe they can repeat last season’s success. Their blend of experience and scoring power gives them a strong platform. They will aim to make a statement in their opening game.
Throw-in is at 2 pm, with Waterford targeting a winning start on the road.
