An incredible show of unity and generosity was on display today as 47 people came together for a special fundraising event in aid of the Solas Cancer Support Centre.

Of those involved, 27 participants represented clubs from across the Waterford GAA, LGFA, and Camogie communities. It highlighted the strong bond that exists across Gaelic Games in the county.

Together, they have already raised an outstanding €85,000. Donations are still coming in through iDonate pages shared by club members.

Participants took on the challenge of abseiling 120ft from the Hogan Stand in Croke Park. For one day, club rivalries were set aside to support a cause that impacts so many families.

Among those taking part were Austin Gleeson of Mount Sion and Gavin O'Brien of Roanmore. Marguerite Casey of Passage Hurling Club also took part.

It was an especially emotional day for Marguerite. Her husband Kevin would have celebrated his 50th birthday today. This gave the occasion a deeply personal meaning.

The event builds on the success of the inaugural Croke Park Abseil held in 2024. It has quickly become one of Solas’ flagship fundraisers.

This year’s event had a strong Waterford focus. The executive boards of Waterford GAA, Camogie, and LGFA all endorsed it. Clubs from across the county were invited to take part.

Speaking at the launch, Austin Gleeson said the event was about unity. He described it as a chance for all Waterford clubs to come together, with “no west and east divide.”

Gavin O’Brien also praised the charity. He highlighted the support it provides to families across the county.

That sense of togetherness was clear throughout today. Players, club members, and supporters stood side by side for a shared cause.

With over €86,000 already raised, the impact is significant. More donations are expected in the coming days.

Today’s event showed both bravery and community spirit. It also highlighted the unwavering support for those affected by cancer across Waterford.
