The Waterford senior footballers began life under new manager Paul Shankey, losing to Clare this afternoon in Lemybrien.

This McGrath Cup curtain raiser was the first hit out for Waterford under their new manager, but they came up against a far more able Clare team who dominated throughout to win 3.18 to 1.07.

After 18 minutes, the home side trailed 1.05 to 0.02 and would reach the half-time break 9 points worse off, 1.10 to 0.04.

In the second period, the Banner picked up where they had left off, outscoring the Déíse 6 points to 2 within fifteen minutes.

On the home straight, the visitors tightened the laces on their shooting boot, nailing 2.02, to squash the Waterford response from Stephen Curry who raised his sides only green flag in injury time.

Shankey's side conclude their McGrath Cup campaign against Cork in Mallow next Sunday at 2 pm.

Waterford Scorers: Stephen Curry 1.03, Caoimhín Maguire 0.1 (f), Jason Curry 0.1 (f), Niall McSweeney 0.1, Micahel Curry 0.1.
