Drogheda United 2 Waterford FC 0
Waterford FC have crashed to their third league defeat in a row following a two nil loss to Drogheda United at Sullivan Lambe Park.
Following the agonising defeat against St Patrick’s Athletic last week, Keith Long made one change to the starting line up with Kyle White returning in place of Dean McMenamy who dropped to the bench.
But the visitors were on the back foot from the start as wave after wave of Drogheda attacks were repelled. Former Blue Thomas Oluwa was a constant thorn in the Waterford side and Warren Davis also caused problems with a goal bound shot deflected for a corner on 13 minutes in their first big chance.
Waterford’s first chance arrived on 32 minutes when Kyle White made a great run forward before slipping it through for Podge Amond but his shot was blocked by Luke Dennison.
The first goal arrived on the stroke of halftime when James Olayinka’s clearance was headed back in by Ryan Brennan and Warren Davis snuck in to fire past Stephen McMullan from a tight angle.
Waterford’s response was immediate with a Noonan corner finding Amond and his header back across the goal was somehow headed wide of the upright by Olayinka.
The home side doubled their lead on 67 minutes when a Darragh Markey cross which was intended for Conor Keeley was misjudged by everyone and ended up in the net.
Despite a raft of changes, Waterford could not find a way back into the game and Drogheda comfortably eased their way back to the top of the table with the victory.
