Waterford FC make the long trip to the North West to face Sligo Rovers on Saturday night in the League of Ireland Premier Division.

The Bit O’Red were the in-form team in the league before suffering a shocking 7-0 defeat at the hands of Drogheda United at Weavers Park.

Both they and the Blues will be looking to bounce back at the Showgrounds as Waterford fell to a 1-0 defeat to title chasing Derry City last Friday.

The Blues and the Bit O'Red are currently fighting for a European spot with just eight matches remaining in the League of Ireland Premier Division.

Waterford have won two of the three meetings so far this season including a one nil victory in Sligo back in May where a Christie Pattisson goal gave Waterford all three points.

Waterford’s top goalscorer this season Pádraig Amond has not found the net in the league since June 7th. Coincidentally, the opposition that day, Sligo Rovers.

Blues Captain Barry Baggley says his team have shown this year that they can compete with the best.

"We believe that on our day we can beat anyone. If we approach the game right we've got the quality in the team to beat anyone and you've seen it this season."

The midfielder acknowledged that the team are looking to get back to the form they showed earlier this season.

"We want to get back to winning ways as soon as possible, build a bit of momentum now going into the last couple of months of the season."

"One or two wins does build a lot of confidence in the squad. The league can change again so quickly and we can start pushing on."

Assistant manager Matt Lawlor will be in charge on the night as Blues boss Keith Long serves the second of his three match suspension.

He says that the opposition will be looking to get back to winning ways having suffered such a heavy loss after a great run of form.

"They had a real purple patch. They're going to be a wounded animal that we need to be prepared for and we will be."

Lawlor says that the task at hand from now til the end of the season is clear for the group.

"Eight cup finals are coming up for us. We have overachieved in what we set out to do at the start of the season but we're here. We've got the capabilities, we've seen the level. We're at the level to go and compete for these European spots. We want to push for these, we really want to push for these."
