Cork City 2 Waterford FC 1

Waterford FC will have to wait another year for a tilt at the FAI Cup after they crashed out of this year’s competition at the hands of Cork City at Turners Cross.

John Coleman had to plan without Andy Boyle so Ronan Mansfield came into the defence for his first start of the season as the Blues lost their third recognised centre half of the season.

And it was those defensive frailties that cost them as they conceded two goals from set pieces.

Cork only had to wait for two minutes for the breakthrough when Evan McLaughlin’s cross was floated to the back post where Matt Murray got behind the defence and managed to get a foot to the ball to touch home.

Waterford drew level on twenty one minutes when Padraig Amond’s header was palmed towards Tommy Lonergan by Conor Brann and the Blues’ striker made no mistake for his third goal of the competition.

It was an even affair in the second period but Waterford had two gilt edged chances that should have been converted with Kyle Whyte doing everything right to get into the area and with the goal at his mercy he under hit the ball which was scrambled away by Freddie Anderson. Nine minutes later Noonan crashed an effort off the goalkeeper who knew little about it. Cork’s winner arrived ten minutes from time when Whyte was adjudged to have fouled Matthew Kiernan near the end line. Evan McLaughlin delivered another perfect cross into the danger area where debutant Kaedyn Kamara headed home unchallenged to send the home side into the quarter finals.
