Waterford FC 2 Wilton United 0
Waterford FC advanced to the Semi Final of the Munster Senior Cup with a solid victory over Wilton United at the RSC.
Manager Keith Long selected a relatively young side and with one eye on a friendly against Sligo Rovers, he elected to leave some of the more established players in the stands.
And he started with a three man defence at the back - Joe Forde and Ronan Mansfield flanking Adam Queally with Robbie McCourt moving into the midfield.
The opening half was dominated by the Blues but there were little real goal chances. Gbemi Arubi went close when he met a Ben McCormack free kick on 8 minutes and McCormack himself flashed a 30 yard effort just wide three minutes later. Arubi was denied by the goalkeeper on 34 minutes when he met another McCormack corner in what was their best chance of the half.
It was a similar story in the second half with the post saving the visitors just before the hour when McCourt headed another corner onto the woodwork.
The breakthrough came on the hour when McCormack got on the end of a Dean McMenamy low cross before firing across the goalkeeper into the bottom corner.
And McCormack turned provider for Arubi on 67 minutes as the young striker fired home for his first goal for the club.
