Waterford author Brian Kelly took home the 2024 Best GAA Publication at this year’s MacNamee awards for his book ’59 An Eyewitness Account of Hurling’s Golden Age’.

The book details Waterford GAA’s last All Ireland Senior hurling victory when the Liam MacCarthy trophy returned to the Déise County.

Waterford took home senior honours in 1959 following victory over Kilkenny.

The Déise and the Cats could not be separated on the first occasion as they drew on a scoreline of 1-17 to 5-05.

But the Déise would not be stopped at the second time of asking as they lifted the Liam MacCarthy trophy following a 3-12 to 1-10 victory at Croke Park on the 4th of October 1959.

The publication celebrates the 65th anniversary of Waterford’s last senior triumph and tells the story of 1959 in the words of the players with recollections from the team and a number of their opponents.
