Two Waterford athletes took home gold medals from the British Masters Championships in Derby this weekend.

West Waterford Athletics Club’s Joe Gough continued to showcase his pedigree on the circuit as he won the 1500 over 70s title in an Irish record time of 5:23.59 – shaving a full six seconds off his previous record.

Gough then cruised home to first place in the 800 metres event in 2 minutes 37 seconds.

Gough’s medal haul for the weekend didn’t stop there as he also landed on the top spot of the podium for the two kilometre steeplechase in 8:42:14 – smashing the old record of 9:03.75.

Tom O’Brien also tasted success at the meeting.

The Waterford AC athlete took home the gold in the over 55s high jump and a silver medal in the long jump.
