Veale and Barr miss out on Olympic standard

Kate Veale will not be pulling on the Irish singlet at the Olympic Games in Paris.

The West Waterford AC race walker was left disappointed in Dublin on Saturday morning where she and her team mate Brendan Boyce came home sixth in the Marathon mixed relay race walk qualifier at Morton Stadium.

The pair needed to hit a qualifying time of less than three hours and eight minutes, while also needing to take first place in the race.

Veale and Boyce came home in sixth in a time of 3.13.34, leaving them five and a half minutes short of the required standard.

The winners were the Czech Republic in 3.02.09, taking the final qualifying spot.

Elsewhere on Saturday morning, Thomas Barr finished second in his 400m hurdles race in Geneva clocking 49.51, but leaving him just outside the Olympic Automatic qualifying standard of 48.70 seconds.

The race was won by Alastair Chalmers Great Britain in 48.98

Barr races next weekend at the National Senior Championships in Santry Dublin where he will once again have the chance to clock the necessary time.
