Two national titles for Waterford boxers

Two national titles for Waterford boxers

For the second year in a row, Shamie McDonagh of St Pauls' boxing club is the National U22 63.5kg champion.

While it all comes down to the final - where Shamie excelled - the work that goes in prior is where the title is earned.

A three-week campaign saw Shamie beat Jason Clooney from Dublin in the quarter-finals, winning by unanimous decision on the judge's scorecards.

The semi-final was another step up in quality with fellow Munster man Danny Lucy standing opposite him. The St. Pauls' boxer was not to be denied, however, winning outright as per the judges once again.

Northern Irish boxer Jamie Gray had fought his way to the final on the other side of the draw, but once in the ring, the Waterford man took over. The scorecards had it 5-0 for a clean sweep in favour of McDonagh.

Head boxing coach of the Irish High-Performance unit Zaur Antia handed Shamie his trophy, and likely, it won't be the last they see of one another.

While it was a bittersweet night for Saviours Crystals Chantelle Robinson.

She was due to fight for the 50kg U18 title and having weighed in, was set to put on the singlet and have her gloves laced.

Chantelle's coaches were then informed that her opponent had withdrawn from the tournament, with the Waterford boxer handed the title by default.
