Tramore’s Jim Goodwin Praises Rising Dundee United Star After Statement Win Over Celtic
Waterford native Jim Goodwin, was full of praise for midfielder Emmanuel Agyei following Dundee United’s impressive 2–0 victory over Celtic on Sunday.
The former Republic of Ireland international, who has carved out a strong managerial career in Scotland, described the 21‑year‑old as a “terrific find” after another standout performance.
Goodwin, who remains a well‑known sporting figure in his hometown of Tramore, watched his side dominate the midfield battle at Tannadice, with Agyei playing a central role.
The Ghanaian, signed in February from Israeli club Ashdod FC, delivered what many fans are calling his best display yet in a United shirt.
Agyei won more duels and regained possession more times than any other player on the pitch, capping his performance with a superbly taken goal from the edge of the box.
His relentless work rate and composure have quickly made him a favourite among supporters.
“Manny has been a terrific find for us,” Goodwin said after the match.
“He does the ugly side of the game really well and reads the game brilliantly. We’re all delighted he got his goal — it gave us that bit of breathing space.”
The win was also an important response for United following their dramatic late collapse in the Dundee derby the previous week. Goodwin highlighted the leadership of captain Ross Graham, who bounced back strongly after scoring an unfortunate own goal in that match.
“There were several big performances, but Ross was immense,” Goodwin said. “He was devastated last week, but he showed real character today.”
The result keeps Dundee United firmly in the hunt near the top of the Scottish Premiership table — and continues to reflect positively on Goodwin, whose managerial success is followed with interest back home in Waterford.
The Tramore man has long been admired for his resilience and tactical acumen, qualities that were on full display as his side outplayed one of Scotland’s biggest clubs.
As Agyei’s rise continues and United build momentum, Goodwin’s stock as one of the most respected Irish managers abroad only grows stronger — something that brings no small sense of pride to his hometown on the Waterford coast.
