Tramore have won the Presidents Cup, beating Villa 4-2 on penalties following a 2-2 draw at Ozier Park this evening.
The Seagulls looked to be home and dry with a 2-0 lead in the second half, but two late goals from Villa forced the tie to be decided on spot kicks.
Dara O’Brien gave Tramore the perfect start to the second period on 46 minutes, before Charlie Binions doubled their lead six minutes later.
With five minutes left, Tramore looked to be heading towards victory but an Anthony Adenopo strike set up a grandstand finish, and so drama ensued – Adam Conway’s 88th minute effort making sure the game would go down to the 12-yard lottery.
Adenopo and Michael Brennan scored their respective penalties, before Dean Walsh saw his effort saved by Gavin Buckley and Tom Carney gave Tramore the advantage from the spot.
Buckley proved the hero once more, denying Adham Masood before Cian Flanagan stepped up to put all the pressure on Villa. Conor Whittle’s effort prolonged the battle, but up stepped Aran O’Brien to fire home and make it 4-2, securing the silverware for the Seagulls.
Villa’s remarkable 37-game unbeaten run in all competitions comes to an end on a night to remember for Tramore.
Not since losing to Pike Rovers on penalties in the first round of the FAI Cup in May 2024 have Villa tasted defeat.
The victory is also Tramore’s first against Villa since the 2023 Presidents Cup decider, when they prevailed on penalties following a 2-2 draw.
