Waterford football manager Paul Shankey has called for the structure of the Tailteann Cup to be reviewed.
Seven of the sixteen group games so far have been decided by double digit margins. The Déise suffered a 24 point defeat to Kildare two weeks ago in Fraher Field.
"When you're playing teams of Division 4 standard, the games are very competitive. When you're coming up against a team that's a Division 1 county, I know that doesn't reflect where they are at the moment but they're Division 1 in everything but name, it's difficult. I'm not sure what the value is of having strong teams in it. There seems to be a few outliers in the Tailteann Cup groups. When you seed it, based on your league position, that makes it extra difficult! It's great to get more games and more training but it's something that needs to be reviewed and improved upon. I don't see any value of really strong teams going into the Tailteann Cup."
Waterford tackle Longford in Round 3 of the competition on Saturday afternoon in Portlaoise. The Déise still have an outside chance of making the knockout stages and Shankey hopes that they can pick up their second win of the season. "I've no fear we'll compete really well on Saturday. It would be great to finish on a high and get a positive result."
