Cork City 2     Waterford FC 0

Ray Scott reports...

Waterford’s unbeaten start to the season came to an end at Turners Cross last evening as Cork City scored two without reply to take all three points.

The Blues were under pressure from the outset and found themselves a goal down after Ruari Keating dispossessed Eddie Nolan on fifteen minutes charged into the area and slipped the ball under the advancing Brian Murphy.

Three minutes late Keating rounded Kevin Joshua before firing low across the area, forcing Darragh Power to turn the ball into his own net under pressure from Cian Murphy.

Timi Sobowale was a halftime change for Power and his strong run on fifty minutes was the first positive of the game for the visitors.

Brian Murphy saved a fine effort from Murphy on fifty-five minutes before two chances inside a minute provided Waterford’s best opportunities.

Louis Britton’s shot looked destined for the bottom corner but David Harrington dived full length to touch it away on seventy-three and then Shane Griffin’s powerful shot cannoned off a defender and was cleared.

Patterson had a late effort but Harrington was again equal to the task as Cork held on for all three points and moved the head of the table while Waterford drop to third on goal difference behind Cork and Galway.
