Waterford senior hurling star Stephen Bennett has admitted he was concerned that he wouldn’t make it back for 2025.
Stephen Bennett played a starring role with 0-11 on Sunday as the Deise came from five points down to defeat Dublin 1-23 to 2-18 in Allianz National League Division 1B.
With games against Westmeath and Offaly left, promotion remains in Waterford’s hands. The Ballysaggart ace says it felt like old times in a Deise shirt.
“A very big win in fairness. The management didn’t put pressure on us, but I think a lot of the younger lads haven’t played in Croke Park. After the first day, we were so disappointed. Carlow fully deserved the win. Since then, we just needed to get back on track. It’s just nice to get back winning games. That was really tight, that’ll stand to us now. Having the crowd back and having them all on the pitch – it’s exciting times again.”
It’s been a difficult 12 months for Bennett having been plagued with a number of injuries. He admits they have taken their toll on his body – and he is simply just glad to be back hurling and showing signs of his brilliant best.
“I’m really happy. It’s my second game since last May with Waterford –since August, even with the club I’m just happy now. Last week against Antrim – I was poor. I’m just happy enough with today. The body will never be good again, I’m happy enough with how today went. We’re kind of trying to work through it. In fairness to physios and to Peter Queally – they’re giving me every chance. We need to go and beat Westmeath now and hopefully get up to Croke Park again.”
When asked if he was ever doubtful of a return this season – the 29-year-old All-Star admitted he had thought of calling time.
“There was thoughts. I think I retired about four times over the winter. In fairness to Peter – I just remember him saying one thing to me down at the Park Hotel. They’re really good – the management, Dan, Eoin, Nigel, all them. Dan and Eoin, they just want you to play hurling. They just tell you, have that little bit of magic. Do what you want. It’s just lovely to play for. I wish I could play for another 10 years with them. We’ll really give it a go now this year and see – but it’s really enjoyable. I’ll tell you what Peter said to me when I retire – but I’m just really enjoying playing for them now.”
