Larry Guinan to be inducted into Waterford Sports Hall of Fame

Larry Guinan will be inducted into the Waterford Sports Hall of Fame at the Waterford Sports Awards in association with WLR and the Granville Hotel on Saturday, January 17th.
Larry played for Waterford for 16 years from 1957 to 1973, and scored 12-11 for his county, winning three Munster medals, a national league, and that famed All-Ireland crown.
At club level, the Mount Sion man won 11 Waterford Senior Hurling Championship titles and 3 Waterford Senior Football Championship titles. Guinan also won five Railway Cup medals and played for five years for the Déise senior footballers.
Now 88, Larry is widely considered one of the greatest hurlers ever to grace the pitch and is a worthy entrant to the Waterford Sporting Hall of Fame. He is the second entrant, following the induction of Alfie Hale in 2024.
A statement from the committee of the Waterford Sports Awards judging committee reads: “Despite hanging up his boots 50 years ago, the fact that Larry Guinan remains a household name in GAA quarters is testament to his ability, longevity, and legacy.
Larry is a hero to many young and old and is one of just three surviving members of the famed 1959 team alongside Michael O’Connor and Freddie O’Brien.
His versatility on the pitch, his leadership qualities and immense talent are among many reasons why he continues to be held in such high regard,d and this recognition is befitting of his status as one of Waterford’s all-time sporting greats.”
The Waterford Sports Awards will be held at a black-tie gala banquet at the Granville Hotel on January 17th, 2026. Guinan will be the guest of honour on the night as he is inducted into the Hall of Fame, while the twelve monthly winners will battle it out to be crowned the overall Waterford Sports Star of the Year for 2025.
