Waterford FC announce signing of Sam Glenfield

Waterford FC have announced the signing of Sam Glenfield on loan from Fleetwood Town FC for the remainder of the season.

The box-to-box midfielder is another of the Cod Army’s most highly rated youngsters and arrives straight from international duty with Northern Ireland at the U19 European Championships this summer.

Glenfield started out with Fleetwood’s U18 side, before progressing to her U21 side over the last 12 months. Scott Brown gave Glenfield his senior debut for the Cods in August 2022, coming on in the final minutes against Premier League side Everton where the Toffees defeated Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium by one-goal-to-nil in their EFL Cup second round clash.

He made his EFL League One debut in November of 2022, where he came off the bench in a narrow defeat away to Oxford United, before making one further first-team appearance against now-Premier League side Ipswich Town in their final game of the season where the sides shared the points in a 2-2 draw.

An exciting attacking player, Sam Glenfield has played underage international football for the Northern Ireland U16 & U18 sides, along with recently representing Northern Ireland in the U19 European Championship over the last ten days – where Northern Ireland were the host nation.

Glenfield started their first group game against Ukraine & final game against Norway, while he was an unused substitute against Italy, as Northern Ireland picked up one point in their historic European Championship campaign.

Now turning his attention to club football with the Blues for the remainder of 2024, Sam is excited at the prospect of playing for Waterford FC, commenting:

“I’m absolutely buzzing – Waterford have been in great form this season, so I hope I can come in & hit the ground running and continue that good form for the rest of the season.

I’m a midfielder with a load of energy who gives something in the final third of the pitch, along with getting stuck into battles & make plenty of passes – and hopefully get my name on the scoresheet too!

I spoke to some of the lads over here that I know (Matt Lawlor & Barry Baggley) and I’ve only gotten great feedback from them. I know a few lads who played with the likes of Derry City and they’ve only said good things about the league!”

Waterford FC Head Coach Keith Long was delighted to welcome Sam to the Blues for the second-half of the season, saying:

“We’re delighted to have Sam join us for the remainder of the season – I’m looking forward to working with him. Sam is an industrious midfielder, who can play & put his foot on the ball. He will bring plenty of energy to the squad.”
