Roanmore are through to the semi-finals of the Waterford Senior Hurling Championship after edging Fourmilewater in a thrilling extra-time battle at Walsh Park. A late Rory Furlong goal sealed a 2-20 to 1-21 win for the Sky Blues in one of the games of the season.

Manager Jamie Hearne admitted he was still processing the chaotic finish afterwards.

“We’re still trying to gather our thoughts after it,” he said. “As you said, an absolute helter-skelter finish. The whole game was nip and tuck the whole way – exactly what we expected. Just glad we came out on the right side of it.”

Roanmore looked in trouble when Fourmilewater surged three points clear in extra time, but Hearne praised his side’s never-say-die attitude.

“We pride ourselves on being a team that never gives up. The lads always have something in the tank. Of course, doubt can creep in when there’s only a minute or two left and you’re chasing, but the character and resilience they showed was outstanding.”

Another turning point came right at the end of normal time, when goalkeeper Jack Chester produced a crucial save to deny Sean Walsh the winner.

“Massive from Jack,” Hearne said. “No surprise to us inside – we see him doing that week in, week out in training and in games. It was so important to keep us alive at that moment.”

The win sets up a mouth-watering semi-final clash with Mount Sion, a challenge Hearne knows will be formidable.

“Mount Sion, along with Ballygunner, are the form team of the championship. They’ve been flying it, winning all their group games and coming through another massive battle yesterday. We’ll be under no illusions – it’s going to be another huge test. For now, it’s just about recovering bodies and getting ready.”
