Power aims to put US Open disappointment behind him

Seamus Power will be aiming to put his US Open disappointment behind him when he tees it up at The Travelers Championship in Connecticut this evening. Power missed the cut by two shots after firing two rounds of 72 at the LA Country Club last week and will be looking for a better showing this week in what is one of the new designated events on the PGA Tour.

That means a $20 million purse with a $3.6m winner's cheque and with the world's top five in action, the competition promises to be hot at the venerable TPC River Highlands layout.

The West Waterford man will also be anxious to secure some FedEx Cup points, having dropped to 18th on the rankings following his missed cuts at the PGA Championship and US Open and where his best result since the start of the year has been a T14 at The Genesis Invitational back in February.

With just 100 days to go to the Ryder Cup in Rome, a good showing could also boost his chances of qualifying automatically for the European team.

Power plays his opening two rounds with Canadian Corey Connors and former Masters and Open champion Zach Johnson with an 18.10 tee time today while he plays at 12.55 tomorrow.

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry are also in the field.
