Modeligo are Munster Junior Camogie champions after a 2-5 to 0-10 win over Croagh Kilfinny in Fethard on Sunday afternoon.
Waterford attacker Mairead O'Brien shot 1-4 from play while Emily Foran gave a Player of the Match performance at corner back. The girls in green and white only managed one point in the second half but a strong defensive effort saw them hold on for a famous victory.
O'Brien cleared the ball on her own end line before the final whistle went and the mad celebrations started. Chloe Power, Mary Kate Curran, Aoife O'Byrne and Eimear Griffin all made big plays in the second period.
Modeligo led 2-4 to 0-6 at the interval. The West Waterford side made the best possible start as Mairead O'Brien motored down the left wing and split the posts in the second minute. The county attacker added another nine minutes later after she beat three defenders. At the other end, Chloe Power produced a point saving block on Orlaith Kelleher. Keelin Madigan then hit the post. Rachel O'Brien rifled over Modeligo's third white flag. Donna Kenny got Croagh on the scoreboard after a quarter hour.
On sixteen minutes, Mairead O'Brien beat five defenders and her shot was too hot to handle for goalkeeper Brid Hannan (1-3 to 0-1). Kenny and Orlaith Kelleher were constant threats for Croagh and narrowed the gap to three. Mairead O'Brien gathered a free from Rachel and shot her third point of the day. On 26 minutes, Mairead O'Brien's free was flicked to the net by a Croagh hurley.(2-4 to 0-4). Injury time efforts from Kenny and Kelleher reduced the lead to four at the break.
Croagh got five unanswered points either side of the break but a Mairead O'Brien single, ten minutes from time, kept Modeligo ahead. Rachel O'Brien and Emily Foran won crucial frees as they clung for the narrowest of wins.
