Waterford native Jayson Molumby has completed a permanent move to EFL Championship side West Bromwich Albion.
Molumby (22) initially made the move to the Hawthorns on a loan deal from Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion, which included an option to buy the Cappoquin man on the basis he made an agreed number of appearances over the course of the campaign.
The former Railway and Villa star has signed a deal which runs until the summer of 2025. He has made 30 appearances for the Baggies this season, scoring his first goal for the club away to Middlesbrough in February.
The Ireland international midfielder has previously embarked upon loan spells with Millwall and Preston North End having found first team opportunities limited in his time at Brighton.
Former Manchester United captain and West Brom boss Steve Bruce was delighted to keep Molumby at the Hawthorns for the foreseeable future.
“We’re really pleased to have Jayson on board permanently. He’s a young player full of energy and passion, and we see plenty of potential in him to grow and develop further. He’s only 22 and he’s already played more than 75 games in the Championship. He’s managed to force himself into our XI recently and now his challenge is to stay there by continuing to show improvements in his game.”
It's believed that the fee agreed between Brighton and West Brom for the transfer of Molumby is somewhere in the region of £1m.
Molumby will be hoping to add to his twelve international caps in Ireland's upcoming Nations League fixtures against Armenia, Ukraine and Scotland in June.
He told West Brom's official website that he was delighted to make the permanent switch.
"I'm delighted to be here on a permanent basis. It was my goal at the start of the season to try and get a permanent move here and I’ve managed to achieve it so I’m really happy. It’s a massive football club and I’m really happy to be here. I think there are some really good people here at West Bromwich Albion. There are so many people who work so hard behind the scenes and all the lads have been really good with me ever since I joined. I’ve really enjoyed being around all the good people here at the club."
Jayson says he's desperate to improve upon what has been a disappointing campaign for West Brom - who failed in their bid for an instant return back to the Premier League following relegation, currently sitting tenth in the league table.
"When you come into a new club it can be tough to settle in and you want to play as much as you can. You’re desperate to impress and you’ll be in the team for some games and out of the team for others. I found it quite tough at times to get a rhythm going, but now that I’m here for the next three years, I want to kick on and make sure I’m a regular in the starting XI. I’m determined to improve and prove to everyone that I’m good enough to be a West Bromwich Albion regular. I think this is a great place for me to grow and improve as a player. I was delighted when Albion came in for me and as I keep saying, it’s a huge club and I want to be a big part of it. As players, we need to handle the pressure of playing for a big club like Albion. I’m no different and I need to do more.”
