Minella Indo, one of the most cherished staying chasers of recent years, has been retired following a stellar career that included a famous Cheltenham Gold Cup triumph and numerous Grade 1 successes.
Trained by Henry de Bromhead at his Knockeen base, Minella Indo etched his name into racing folklore when winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2021. Under a perfectly judged ride from Jack Kennedy, the then nine-year-old went off at odds of 9/1 and outstayed stablemate A Plus Tard in a thrilling finish up the Prestbury Park hill.
The following year, the placings were reversed as A Plus Tard stormed home to claim Gold Cup glory, but both results signified the strength and dominance of the de Bromhead yard during a golden era for the team.
Minella Indo had shown his potential long before his Gold Cup triumph. He burst onto the Festival scene in 2019, causing a 50/1 shock in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle, and quickly proved it was no fluke by adding the Grade 1 Irish Mirror Novice Hurdle at Punchestown to his growing CV just two months later.
Among his eight career victories, none perhaps held more emotional weight than his win in the Savills Chase at Tramore on New Year’s Day 2023. It was a deeply poignant occasion, as the local crowd at Tramore offered a moving tribute to the de Bromhead family in the wake of the tragic death of Henry’s young son, Jack, who had died in a pony racing accident months earlier.
The gelding’s durability was further underlined by his efforts in the Aintree Grand National, finishing third in 2023 and signing off with a gallant ninth-place finish in this year’s renewal.
