Former Waterford hurler and three time All-Star Ken McGrath has expressed his concerns with playing the inter-county championship in October.
Croke Park have planned for club competitions to return on July 31st with inter-county games to resume on October 17. Inter-county training can resume from September 14th as per the GAA guidelines - leaving just four weeks of a run in to games.
The current plan would see the inter-county championship extend into winter months when weather and pitch issues start to arise.
Speaking to WLR's 'On The Ball with Nigel Kelly' this week, the four time Senior Munster Hurling Champion thought that the club game should be given sole priority with the inter-county game being scrapped until next year.
The potential for a straight knockout championship is something that McGrath see's as a positive and could boost attendances at games when fans return to the stands. Numbers at games have been lower in the past two years and a straight shoot-out championship could see the punters return in greater numbers.
